Tee it Forward – Spring Net Championship

Jericho’s DeAngelis takes overall Spring Net title at Heidelberg

BERNVILLE, Pa. – Not even a recent hip replacement could slow down Joe DeAngelis, a GAP Net and Stableford veteran, from winning this one.

DeAngelis, a Jericho National Golf Club member of 10 years, garnered 42 Stableford points in result of an 8-over 78 gross score to win the Tee it Forward – Spring Net Championship overall title. His victory at Heidelberg Country Club (par 70, 6,125 yards from the back tees) came after a match of scorecards with Radley Run’s Greg Smith, whose back-nine Stableford score of 19 was bettered by DeAngelis’ 21.

“I’ve been playing in these events for so long. I’ve tried many times,” said DeAngelis, 66, of Newtown, Pa. “To finally get [a trophy] is a great feeling.”

Also a great feeling? Jarring two gross birdies in one day as a 14-course handicap. Those back-nine red numbers helped move DeAngelis into the top spot when it came down to tie-breaking time.

On No. 11 (par 3, 115 yards), his 9-iron approach landed softly to 10 feet, leading to the first birdie. Just a few holes later, DeAngelis got another to fall when he crushed a 5-hybrid to 10 feet on No. 14 (par 4, 320 yards).

“Those two birdies, man, they were big for me,” said DeAngelis. “This is the best golf round I’ve played all year.”

Coming off a January hip replacement, the rehab road has been a challenging one. Today’s win showed the champion all the perseverance was well worth it.

“I’m hitting the ball, pain-free, for the first time in awhile. It’s a great feeling,” he said.

Unlike today’s event, DeAngelis fell victim to a match of scorecards previously in the 2018 Francis B. Warner (Net) at White Manor Country Club. McCall Golf & Country Club’s John O’Rourke, the eventual champion, carded a 5-under net back nine to best DeAngelis’ 3-under score that day. It’s been in his mind ever since, serving as motivation.

“Yeah, that was a tough one. The tiebreaker is not something you ever think about when you’re out competing on the course,” he said. “But obviously today, I’m happy the way things turned out.”

Flourtown Country Club’s Alison Kellock claimed the Women’s Flight top prize by default. Despite that, Kellock tried to take her round as low as possible. She went on to finish with a gross-score round of 94, resulting in 27 Stableford points.

“Tee-to-green, I was very solid. My putting could have used some work but I’m happy to have performed the way I did. Plus, I had a blast with my groupmates,” said Kellock, 53, of Oreland, Pa.

The reigning Winter Series Women’s Amateur (Gross) Player of the Year is no stranger to the winner’s circle. She tees it up in almost every GAP Women’s event on the calendar slate.

“I usually drag my friends out here to play with me because it’s that much fun,” she said. “I take care of the registration and all that, and we just came out here and have a great time. Coming out and playing some incredible golf courses is fantastic.”

The Spring Net Championship, formerly known as the First Handicap Tournament, is open to players 18 years of age and older with handicap index less than 36.0. The event began in 1946. The Association adopted the Tee It Forward parameters in 2012. It also changed the scoring format to net Stableford. This marks the fourth year of a Women’s Flight in the Spring Net.

The Tee It Forward initiative encourages golfers to play the course at a length that is aligned with their average driving distance.
