Warner Cup (Net): McCall’s McCabe marvels field at Radley Run

WEST CHESTER, Pa.- Sixty-two is a magic number for Bill McCabe, Jr. of McCall Golf & Country Club. The last time McCabe fired a net 62, he took home the 2006 Fall Net Championship at Bucks County Country Club. He attained that magic number once again on Tuesday to take home the Warner Cup (Net) title at Radley Run Country Club (par 72, 6,115 yards).| Scorecards | History |

McCabe, playing as a 14 handicap, carded two gross birdies, 11 pars, four bogeys and one double on his way to a natural 76, which ended as the low score in the field.

“My game’s really starting to come around. Yesterday, I played well at our place and it gave me real confidence to play well today,” said the Springfield, Pa. resident.

The 68-year-old’s round was kick started at No. 5 (par 4, 385 yards). Utilizing his 5-iron hybrid, he stuck his approach shot to 18 feet and sunk the natural-birdie putt. The second red number on McCabe’s scorecard came at No. 13 (par 3, 149 yards). He placed a 6-iron to 10 feet. After all four members of his playing group reached the green safely off the tee, McCabe received a helpful read from fellow competitor Scott Ryan’s putt, and eventually jarred his birdie attempt.

“The greens were perfect and the speed was very respectful. I tried to use caution because everybody was going four or five feet by,” said McCabe. “They were really rolling out today. Everything about the course was in excellent condition.”

Despite a nearly flawless round, McCabe did run into some trouble when a few hiccups arrived around the putting green on the Back 9.

“I had one hole on the back where I got real nervous, and I chipped two balls sideways,” said McCabe. “Later on in the round, if I was in the fairway near the green, I was putting in from there. I learned that one down in Florida.”

McCabe finished 8 shots ahead of runner-up Scott Dichter of Meadia Heights Golf Club. In addition to his Warner Cup (Net) and 2006 Fall Net Championship wins, McCabe was also victorious at the 2006 Spring Net Championship at The Club at Morgan Hill.

“I’ve been fortunate to get wins in both the Spring and Fall Net. I’m super happy to get by with that,” McCabe said. “But the Warner Cup (Net) is just excellent. It felt great to play well.“

Francis B. Warner of Philadelphia Cricket Club served as the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s secretary-treasurer for 18 years. After his death in 1933, the Association started the Francis B. Warner Cup as an ongoing tribute in his memory.
