Ryan takes Chapman Cup (Net) in scorecard playoff

 Playing in only his second GAP event, Ryan, a 21 handicap, battled though his nerves early to outlast the 67-player field.

  “On the first hole (par 4, 344 yards) I was so nervous that I was a couple feet from the hole for birdie and ended up making bogey,” said an excited Ryan from Bryn Mawr, Pa.

  Ryan, who is blind in his left eye as a result of his intramural boxing days at the U.S. Naval Academy, did not expect to bounce back from his difficult start.

  Ryan’s carefree approach to the back nine paid off as he carded a 4-over-par 40. A far cry from the 12-over-par 48 he registered on his tumultuous front nine.

  Scattergood, a 13 handicap who resides in Oley, Pa., relied on an accurate tee game and solid putting amidst recently aerated greens to challenge for the tittle.

  “I kept it between the trees and out of trouble off the tee,” Scattergood said. “And because of the aeration, I was really just trying to two putt.”

  Scattergood birdied No. 6 (par 4, 308 yards) with a solid drive that left him 83 yards to the pin. From there, he put his wedge shot just four feet left of the hole for birdie.

  This year for the first time, the Chapman Cup was split into two divisions, Gross and Net, to accompany more players. The Gross Tournament was held on Aug. 23 at Woodcrest CC and won by Andy Thompson of Overbrook GC who fired a 2-under-par 69.

  The Chapman Memorial Cup is named for Frank H. Chapman, who served as the Association’s Secretary-Treasurer for 23 years. Players with a USGA Handicap Index of 7.1 and above were eligible to compete in today’s tournament.
