Edgmont CC’s Clossick takes Chapman Cup (Net)

LINWOOD, N.J. – Jim Clossick of Edgmont CC carded a 6-under-par 64 (net) to take the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s Chapman Memorial Cup (Net) on Thursday at Linwood CC (par 70, 5,997 yards). The Chapman is a senior tournament for players 55 years of age and older.

Clossick, a 10 handicap from Newtown Square, Pa., carded seven birdies and a birdie-for-net eagle on No. 11 (par 4, 365 yards) to beat out the 36-player field for the championship.

Last year, the Chapman Cup was split into two divisions, Gross and Net, to accompany more players. The Gross Tournament was held on Aug. 16 at Overbrook GC and won by long-time Overbrook member Ray Thompson of who fired a 2-under-par 68. Thompson, the Senior Player of the Year points leader, also went on to win the 2007 Warner Cup, Senior Amateur and Senior Silver Cross Award.

The Chapman Memorial Cup is named for Frank H. Chapman, who served as the Association’s Secretary-Treasurer for 23 years. Players with a USGA Handicap Index of 7.1 and above were eligible to compete in today’s tournament.

Founded in 1897, the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) is the oldest regional golf association in the United States and serves as the principal ruling body of amateur golf in its region. Its 135 Member Clubs and 60,000 individual members are spread across parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. The purpose of the Association is simple: To promote, protect and preserve the game of golf in the region.
