Edgmont Country Club’s Joyce wins Warner Cup (Net)

WEST CHESTER, Pa.–Timothy Joyce of Edgmont Country Club injured his right shoulder in July of 2011 playing baseball with his grandson. Joyce, 68, instinctively dove for a ball and, since, has been dealing with lingering pain. His Handicap Index, in that time, has risen from 11 to 16.
Tuesday in the Francis B. Warner Cup (Net) at Concord Country Club, Joyce rejuvenated his game. He carded a gross 80 for a net 62 en route to overall championship honors. He edged Richard Amoroso of Hershey’s Mill Golf Club by three shots. Home club hopeful Tom O’Dea, who held the clubhouse lead for a significant amount of time, placed third, four shots behind.
“It’s pretty exciting,” said Joyce of Media, Pa. “Ever since I got injured it’s been pretty frustrating because my handicap has been going up and up. I was trying to compensate for my shoulder the last few years and my swing has gotten screwed up. I received a couple of injections this year, one in March and another in May, and it’s started to feel better.”
Joyce made the turn from the frontside in 3-under net before finding his groove to open the back nine. He recorded six consecutive under-par net scores. He carded five birdies and an eagle.
“I hit some career shots,” said Joyce. “I hit a shot out of the right rough between two trees on No. 12 (par 4, 386 yards) that stopped eight feet from the hole.”
His lone gross birdie for the net eagle came on No. 14 (par 5, 438 yards).
“I hit a good drive and knocked a 9-iron over the corner [of the dog-leg right] to 70 yards. I hit my sand wedge to 10 feet,” said Joyce, who moved from The Springhaven Club to Edgmont two years ago. “[My playing partner] Jim Barron was just outside my mark on the same line and lipped out. I made it.”
At 10-under-par net after that stretch, Joyce looked toward the end of the wet rainbow.
“I did start to think about it,” remarked Joyce. “I made a couple bad decisions. I was in the bunker of No. 17 and left myself a 50-yard putt. I didn’t know the distance to the water on No. 18 (par 5, 480 yards) and shanked it, which I’ve been known to do.” Joyce finished with a gross double for a net bogey.
“I call the injections liquid oil,” said Joyce. “I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Amoroso was 5-under net on his front side and got it to 7 under after 13 holes. However, he managed only four net pars and a bogey in his final five. He finished with a gross 92 for a net 65. Amoroso carries a 23.8 Handicap Index.
“It’s fantastic,” said Amoroso, 66, of West Chester, Pa. “I am so erratic. My last two scores were over 100. I’m trying. Maybe I’m trying too hard. Maybe I was a little more calm and relaxed today knowing I didn’t have a shot.”
O’Dea , 72, of Chadds Ford, Pa., has been a member of Concord for 37 years. The recently retired surgeon eyed the Warner Cup (Net) as a social opportunity. It’s a way “to get back mixing with people.”
O’Dea established the scoreboard bench mark early. Playing in the third group out his 78 gross equaled a 66 net.
O’Dea graduated from Georgetown University in 1962 where he played basketball with now former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue.
