Amanda Bielski and Allie Robertson of RiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve, Danielle Bell of McCall Golf Club and Liz Casale of USGA/GAP GC stayed cooler than the rest. The team carded a 17-under-par 56 to take the title at Moselem Springs Golf Club (par 73, 5,316 yards).

Flourtown Country Club’s Rachel Bird, Kristen Lieberman, Alison Kellock and Lauren Rothfeld took the second flight with an 18-under-par 55. Sheila Bonanno and Ruthann Voitek of Fox Hill Country Club teamed up with Bernadette McHugh of Huntsville Golf Club and Nancy Luciani of Glen Oak Country Club to take the third flight prize with a 15-under-par 58.
The Women’s Spring Scramble is a Net event. Flights are determined based on combined team Handicap Indexes.
The event utilizes a shotgun start. The first flight winners, who finished a two shots clear of the field, started on No. 4 (par 4, 350 yards). A pair of pars got the team out in front. A mixture of gross and Net birdies and eagles kept the pedal to the floor.
“We had a lot of good drives and a lot of good putts made today,” Robertson, 38, of Gilbertsville, Pa., said. “The putts really helped.”
On No. 7 (par 5, 419 yards) the team selected Casale’s drive, Robertson put the team in scoring position after she lashed a 3-wood 200 yards uphill. Casale holed the ensuing 3-footer. A Net dot forged three into two.
The team made Gross eagle on No. 17 (par 5, 345 yards). After Bell’s drive, Casale’s approach, an 8-iron from 135 yards, stopped 15 feet away. Bell swept in the eagle.
The team set itself apart after another eagle on No. 2 (par 4, 353 yards). This time, the team selected Bielski’s drive. Then, Robertson steered a 9-iron from 130 yards to 25 feet. Danielle finished the job.
Save for Robertson, it was the team’s first trip to the George Fazio property.
“Great conditions,” Bell, 39, of Bryn Mawr, Pa., said. “Really fast greens which favored how we play.”
Despite the team’s past participation in other GAP women’s events, it was the group’s first appearance in the Spring Scramble. Credit Bielski with the draft.
“I reached out to Allie because she’s my member-member partner at RiverCrest,” Bielski, 42, Glen Mills, Pa. “Then, I played with Danielle in the GAP [Mixed Foursomes].”
Casale, a friend of Danielle’s, rounded out the foursome.
“Everyone responded within five minutes,” Bielski said. “It was very stress free.”
A title-earning performance in the group’s first start is encouraging. An enthusiastic affirmation followed any question about entering more team events together.
The next event on the GAP Women’s Schedule is the 5th BMW GAP Women’s Championship July 6-7 at Jericho National Golf Club.
Note:
BMW, sponsor of the GAP Team Matches, Philadelphia Amateur and Women’s Championship, had a presence at the event. Several BMW automobiles were available for test drives. The keys to a custom-painted M3 Competition anticipated new ownership by anyone who aced No. 5 (par 3, 170 yards).
