Maslanka, Powell prevail in Junior TOC

Michael Maslanka reclaimed the GAP/AGA Junior Tournament of Champions trophy Tuesday.

The Country Club of Scranton member carded a 3-over-par 75 to win the event’s 23rd edition at Huntsville Golf Club (par 72, 6,358 yards). He edged Glen Oak Country Club’s Luke Morgan and Elkview Country Club’s L.V. Pegula by a stroke.

Maslanka, 16, of Taylor, Pa., also won in 2020. Severe weather Monday shortened the event to 18 holes.

In the Junior Girls’ Division (par 72, 5,241 yards), Elmhurst Country Club’s Gwendolyn Powell won her fourth title in five years (2018, 2020-21). She carded a 2-over-par 74 to prevail by 11 strokes.

The GAP/AGA Junior Tournament of Champions concludes the Lawler Junior Tour Series sponsored by Abington Center for Cosmetic & Family Dentistry and Community Bank. It is a two day, 36-hole event. Winners of a Lawler Junior Tour Series event, in addition to those who ranked high in scoring average/finish, make up the field.
