Greens strike gold at Green Pond

BETHLEHEM, Pa. —Corey and Adam Green remember the feeling.

Losing the Parent/Child (Older/Middle) a year ago by a stroke. Nitpicks and regrets filled the two-plus hour drive home. Close but no cigar, as the cliché goes.

“What could’ve been?” changed to “What was?” Thursday. The Greens carded a 3-under-par 68 to capture the Middle Division of the 115th Parent/Child (Middle/Older) at Green Pond Country Club (par 71, 6,165 yards).

Corey & Adam Green

The event’s format is greensomes (selective drive/alternate shot).

“We signed up for this one to try and get some redemption,” Corey, 49, said. “Now that he’s out of school, I can steal him away for a couple of tournaments, apart from the ones he plays in on his own.” Adam is a rising junior at Towson University, majoring in criminal justice.

The Country Club of York members, at 1 over through 13 holes, swirled in spiral of déjà vu. Then the Greens inked four straight birdies to vault atop the leaderboard.

On No. 14 (par 4, 362 yards), a mammoth drive from Adam put Corey underneath a tree, short of a guarding pond. He nipped a 56-degree wedge to 15 feet above the flagstick. Adam buried the ensuing birdie. Corey responded with a heatseeker of his own, shredding a 7-iron to five feet on No. 15 (par 3, 167 yards). On the par 5, 504-yard 15th hole, Corey’s 7-iron from 178 yards left Adam in a delicate spot, some 15 yards from a tight hole location. He flighted a wedge to perfection, letting the fringe release it to a foot. Corey cleaned up the birdie putt.

Adam’s 8-iron on No. 17 (par 3, 177 yards) settled five feet from the flagstick. Corey drained a downhill slider. The Parkton, Md. residents nearly ended their round with five consecutive conversions, but Adam’s 20-footer on No. 18 (par 4, 324 yards) needed another revolution or three.

A missed opportunity, sure. But not a dagger like last year.

“When we got four [birdies] in a row, I thought that was going to be enough,” Corey said. “Even when we birdied the 15th hole, I thought we had a good chance.”

The Greens drove two hours and 45 minutes to compete Thursday. A 5:05 a.m. departure. Adam slept most of the trip, so a rehash of 2025 never materialized.

Maybe victory speeches will soundtrack a trip to South Carolina next week. A family vacation awaits.

“I’m not a big beach guy, so I’ll hang out, watch some golf, try to play golf,” Corey said.

A charter fishing trip is also on the itinerary.

“When I’m not golfing maybe I’ll [take up fishing],” Adam, 20, said.

Senior & Super Senior
The Parent/Child is perennially on the Kelly calendar. “Nice, fun day” is always the review, regardless of the result.

Well, the result turned out to be a pretty good one Thursday. Kevin and Ryan Kelly posted a 2-under-par 69 to take the event’s Senior Division (par 71, 5,775 yards).

The Philadelphia Cricket Club members also won in 2019 at Honeybrook Golf Club and 2024 at Heidelberg Country Club.

“This was our first time here. It’s a fun golf course,” Kevin, a GAP Board of Directors member, 59, of Horsham, Pa., said.

The Kellys opened with three circles (birdies) in four holes. Ryan’s drive reached the front of No. 1 (par 4, 325 yards) green. The team tallied two putts from 20 feet. Similar story on No. 2 (par 5, 530 yards) after Kevin’s 8-iron found the back of the green. He again showcased power on No. 4 (par 4, 265 yards) by driving the green. Again, a team two putt for birdie.

“The first four holes is where you can score. It got harder as the day went on, in my opinion,” Ryan, 30, of Conshohocken, Pa., said. “It was a lot of holding on [on the back nine].”

Ryan & Kevin Kelly

Golf binds father and son. The Kellys typically join each other for a round once a week. Kevin, upon his retirement from Kelly + Partners, Inc., a document management service he founded and managed for 25 years, splits time between the Philadelphia region and Berkeley Hall in Blufton, S.C. Ryan joined his dad for a handful of rounds this summer.

Ask for a shared interest aside from golf, and you’ll get a moment of silence.

“It’s a lot of what we do now,” Ryan, who works in insurance, said.

Olde Homestead Golf Club’s Larry Pritchard and his son Kyle of the host club seized the Super-Senior Division (par 71, 5,380 yards) in a scorecard playoff. The team emerged from a 3 under deadlock that included defending champions Craig and Alan Kliewer of Lebanon Country Club, Lon and Travis Weiner of Huntsville Golf Club and Joe Morganti of Llanerch Country Club and Joey Morganti of Overbrook Golf Club.

The USGA-recommended scorecard tiebreaking method starts with the final nine. The Pritchard and Weiner teams both finished that stretch in 1 under. The next tiebreaker is final six holes. The Pritchard team completed that portion in 2 under to prevail.
