The Paoli, Pa. venue previously served as a co-host site in 2008, when the Joseph H. Patterson Cup was a one-day, 36-hole event. St. Davids Golf Club also hosted that year. Yardley Country Club’s Glenn Smeraglio took the title. In 1969, GAP Hall of Famer William Hyndman, III claimed his record 10th and final Patterson Cup at Aronimink Golf Club with Waynesborough serving as the second site. Fellow GAP Hall of Famer David Brookreson won in an 18-hole playoff in 1991 when Waynesborough shared the hosting duties with Gulph Mills Golf Club.
In 2009, the Joseph H. Patterson Cup changed from a one-day, 36-hole event at two sites to a two-day, 36-hole affair. In 2024, GAP expanded the Joseph H. Patterson Cup from 36 holes to 54 holes. The event is listed on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) and eligible for points.
The field of 144 players will be cut to the low 40 scores and ties after Round One. For Rounds Two and Three, players will be paired in twosomes. Repairing will not occur before the final round.

The Silver Cross Award, presented to the player with the lowest aggregate score in the qualifying rounds of the BMW Philadelphia Amateur Championship and the Joseph H. Patterson Cup, will also be determined.
Green Valley Country Club’s Ben Feld and Briarwood Golf Club’s Michael Crowley lead the Silver Cross way at 5-under-par 137.
In last year’s rain-soaked edition at Concord Country Club, Little Mill Country Club’s Troy Vannucci added his first Patterson Cup to his collection. The event was reduced to 36 holes because of weather.
“You never know when you are going to get a win,” Vannucci, 33, of Marlton, N.J., said. “You try not to think about the GAP Grand Slam when you are on the precipice of winning a new GAP Major. I love the 54-hole format. It gives people a chance to separate themselves from the pack. Anything can happen with 36 holes in a day. It is cool to have my name on two of the GAP Major trophies. I am trying to keep knocking them down the best I can.”
Vannucci kicked off his season the right way with a win at the 42nd Middle-Amateur at Riverton Country Club in May. It was his second title (2022).
“This season got off to a great start for me winning the GAP Mid-Am,” Vannucci said. “I saw the highs of that, but the rest of the GAP Major performances for me have been lackluster. I didn’t play well at the GAP Amateur and Open. Missing the cut at the Philadelphia Amateur was eye-opening. I really love Aronimink, so to miss out there was a bummer. You can’t afford to have a bad day now. I started off the season at the peak and now I am down in the valleys, but strong showings at the New Jersey Amateur and Open have me back on track.”
Vannucci tees off No. 1 at 9 a.m. alongside Drue Nicholas of Galloway National Golf Club and Aaron Fricke of LuLu Country Club. Nicholas is looking to become the first player to win the Philadelphia Amateur, Philadelphia Open and Joseph H. Patterson Cup in the same season after his triumphs at Aronimink and Bidermann Golf Course, respectively, earlier this year.
“I think I can play well at Waynesborough,” Vannucci said. “It is pretty favorable off the tee and is a second-shot golf course. The property is really beautiful there. It fits into my game well. Nowadays you have to bring your game. These guys are so good now.”
The George Fazio design, renovated in 2021 by Andrew Green, offers impeccable conditions, picturesque par 3s and severely-contoured greens that will challenge GAP’s best.
The Joseph H. Patterson Cup is GAP’s fourth and final Major of the championship schedule. It is Philadelphia’s premiere stroke-play championship and GAP’s second oldest tournament. Provident Bank returns for a fifth year as the event’s presenting sponsor.
There are six former Patterson Cup champions in the field: Vannucci (2024), Cole Berman of Merion Golf Club (2014), Andrew Mason of Huntingdon Valley Country Club (2011), Nicholas (2022), Jeff Osberg of Pine Valley Golf Club (2010, 2016, 2019) and Logan Paczewski of Huntsville Golf Club (2023).
GAP Magazine highlighted the history of the Joseph H. Patterson Cup in its Summer 2022 edition. The tournament honors a man who championed golf in its infancy at Philadelphia Cricket Club. Friends of Patterson donated the Cup, designed by the esteemed J.E. Caldwell & Co., to the Association in 1900.
Spectators and media are welcome to attend.
Live scoring will be available on gapgolf.org. Stay up to date with tournament news via GAP social media channels by following @gaofphilly on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube.
