| Merion’s Maude returns to Major spotlight |

The 117th Joseph H. Patterson Cup presented by Callaway Golf was shortened to 18 holes Thursday after a pair of weather delays and subsequent darkness prohibited the completion of Round 2. The event reverted to Round 1 results, thus giving Jeff Osberg of Pine Valley Golf Club his third Patterson Cup title (2010, 2016). Osberg posted a 4-under 67 on Wednesday. He entered the final round with a one-stroke lead on three players.

“I thought the weather was supposed to be perfect today. After we got called off on the second hole, I figured light was going to be more of the issue,” said Osberg, 35, of Bryn Mawr, Pa. “I didn’t realize more weather was coming. Lightning struck [at 7:23 p.m.] and that was kind of it. I wasn’t sure we were going to finish anyway.”

Osberg was preparing to play his third shot on No. 13 when the final siren blew. He was facing a 30-yard pitch shot from in front of the green. At the time, Osberg was 3 under. Will Davenport of Whitemarsh Valley Country Club and Tug Maude of Merion Golf Club held the clubhouse lead. Both completed their second round and stood at 3 under.

“In my mind hopefully we were getting the whole thing in,” said Osberg. “I didn’t plan on us not.”

Osberg’s season parallels his 2016 campaign. That year, and this one, he fell in the Amateur Final, before winning the Open Championship, Patterson Cup and Silver Cross in succession. He is the only player to accomplish each of the aforementioned feats in the same season. To further clarify, no player has ever won all four titles in the same calendar year.

“We talked at Stonewall after I lost in the Final and I kind of joked that the year was very similar [to 2016],” Osberg said. “I don’t know if it was foreshadowing or what. I said I had a ton of confidence after the first two events [Middle-Amateur and Amateur championships] even though they didn’t go my way.”

Danny Harcourt of Mercer Oaks Golf Course, Matt Teesdale of Lu Lu Country Club and Eric Williams of Honesdale Golf Club finished in a three-way tie for second at 3 under. This was Teesdale’s first Major appearance since the Amateur in 2017 and top Patterson Cup showing since finishing second in 2013. This was also Harcourt and Williams best Patterson finish.

Osberg’s margin of victory in the Silver Cross was six strokes. He finished at 6 under. This was his fourth Silver Cross (2010, 2015-16). Kevin Scherr of Woodstone Country Club & Lodge and Zach Barbin of Loch Nairn Golf Club tied for second at even par.
