GAP, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, will conduct a blood drive at Blue Bell Country Club on Thursday, March 3. It will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the club’s Belle Ballroom.
Registration in advance is required. Two appointment slots will be allotted every 15 minutes (9 to 10:15 a.m., 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.), one appointment every 15 minutes from 10:30 a.m. 12:15 p.m. At the top of each hour, an appointment slot will be available only to donors with the following blood types: O-, O+, B- and A-.
The process of donating blood takes approximately 7-10 minutes. Once approximately a pint of blood is collected, an American Red Cross staff member will remove the needle and place a bandage on a donor’s arm. Refreshments will be available so that donors can adjust to a slight decrease in fluid volume.
The American Red Cross is facing a national blood crisis – its worst blood shortage in more than a decade. Dangerously low blood inventory levels pose a concerning risk to patient care and force doctors to make difficult decisions regarding whom receives blood transfusions and whom must wait until more blood products become available. The American Red Cross issued a plea for blood and platelet donors to give now in order to help prevent further delays in vital medical treatments.
In recent weeks, the American Red Cross experienced less than a one-day supply of critical blood types and needed to limit blood product distributions to hospitals as a result. At times, as much as one-quarter of hospital blood needs is not being met.
In a continuing effort to expand its community outreach, GAP partnered with the American Red Cross in 2021, conducting blood drives at Overbrook Golf Club in Villanova, Pa., Tavistock Country Club in Haddonfield, N.J. and White Clay Creek Country Club in Wilmington, Del. Overall, it raised 84 viable donations for local hospital patients.
