5th Mixed Foursomes Championship: St. Davids

Huntingdon Valley duo wins in scorecard playoff

WAYNE, Pa. – For the past three years, Billy Reube and Jessica Weikel have partnered in Huntingdon Valley Country Club’s Mixed-Member Knockout, a season-long mixed better-ball competition at the pair’s home club. Despite never winning, their golf partnership persisted. In the 5th Mixed Foursomes Championship at St. Davids Golf Club (par 70, 6,089 yards), their luck finally changed. The HVCC duo carded a 2-under-par 68 to capture the title.

Reube and Weikel were tied by DuPont Country Club’s Mark Wachter and Lauren Klick. The former team prevailed after the USGA recommended scorecard tiebreak method was employed.

“We both hit it very good today,” Reube, 32, of New York, N.Y., said. “Coming down the stretch, Jess made two putts inside five feet that were huge to finish the day for us. We took advantage of some of the easier holes but at the same time made good pars.”

Wachter and Klick took the Net Division with a 3-under-par 67.

In a shotgun start, Reube and Weikel started on St. Davids’ par 3, 165-yard, 10th hole. An unfortunate bogey at the outset was quickly corrected on No. 11 (par 5, 520 yards). Reube followed Weikel’s drive with a 3-wood from 270 yards that landed right of the green. Weikel’s chip landed 20 feet from the cup and Reube drained the putt. The friends and clubmates remained steady before carding two more birdies in their final four holes to jump to the top of the leaderboard. On No. 6 (par 3, 140 yards), Weikel tapped in after Reube’s pitching wedge landed one foot from the hole. Weikel followed Reube’s tee shot with a 5-wood from 180 yards that landed short of the green on No. 8 (par 5, 452 yards). Reube chipped up from 50 yards and Weikel holed the 6-footer.

“The course really [lent] itself to championship play,” Weikel, 44, of Doylestown, Pa., said. “With the amount of pressure that it is playing in a two-person team event with a field that has the depth that you see in GAP events, playing alternate-shot is like the stressful cherry on top.”

The pair were introduced to one another at Huntingdon Valley in 2018 by J. Wood Platt Caddie Scholarship Trust Chairwoman and Huntingdon Valley member, Tina Gregor.

The pair agreed that the Net nature of the Mixed-Member Knockout event contributes to their continued lack of success.

“I feel like this is the first year we’ve understood where the other person likes to be,” Reube said. “I think we finally know each other’s game [and] we would expect to be better with time.”

Throughout their lives, competitive golf has been a constant. Weikel said she received a golf scholarship to Longwood University, where she graduated in 2000. Additionally, she said she was a member of the Women’s Maryland State Golf Association Team Matches championship team that same year. Weikel also stated that in 2008 she earned a spot on the Duramed Futures Tour, a developmental level of the LPGA Tour which is now known as the Epson Tour. She lost her card that same year. Reube played golf at Drexel University and graduated in 2013. In 2019, he appeared on Huntingdon Valley’s BMW GAP Team Matches championship team.

The pair said they are looking forward to playing in more partner events in the future.

In an effort to further promote women’s golf, GAP created a Mixed Foursomes Championship in 2019. The event’s format is selective drive/alternate shot. Open to one female and one male golfer teams who are 19 years of age and who have 36.0 handicap index or less. Only one player from each two-person team must be a member of a Member Club with a GAP handicap.
