Defending champion Lydic of BTD out in front

NEW HOPE, Pa. – Last year’s BMW GAP Women’s Championship field was tested in hot, humid conditions with real feel temperatures ranging in the triple digits.

A stark difference in the weather pattern, including showers of varying intensities throughout Round One followed by a freshening breeze in Round Two, opposed competitors on Day One of the event’s 5th edition at Jericho National Golf Club (par 72, 6,112 yards) Monday.

Different weather conditions, same name atop the leaderboard.

Sarah Lydic, last year’s champion and leader after Day One, leads the field by six shots at 1 under after Round Two. The Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club member opened with a 2-under-par 70 in the morning, and held steady with a 73 in the afternoon.

“I had no expectations because I didn’t know the course,” Lydic, 20, of Oceanview, Del., said. “‘It is what it is’ has been my mindset this summer. I’ve been playing well.”

Addie Chang of Philadelphia Cricket Club and Jackie Rogowicz of Merion Golf Club are tied for second at 5 over.

A cut to the low 20 scorers and ties was made at the conclusion of Round Two. A total of 20 players finished inside the cutline, which stopped at 83.

The final round begins at 8 a.m. tomorrow. The leaders tee off at 9:16 a.m.

Lydic’s goal on Day One at Jericho was simple; Get out in front and stay there. She harmoniously completed parts one and two of her task without friction. She cited hitting greens and putting herself in scoring positions as keys to success. Her game is good right now and she’s trusting it.

“I hit 30 balls yesterday before coming up here. If I do too much right now I think I overthink it,” Lydic said. “I’m still working hard, but I know I’ve been playing since I was 4 years old and I know how to hit the ball. It’s more about consistency.”

Lydic did the hard work during the morning round. Her bogey-free front nine was sweetened by birdies on Nos. 5 (par 3, 163 yards) and 7 (par 5, 505 yards). On the former, she flighted an 8-iron to 8 feet. On the latter, she hit a 58-degree wedge from 74 yards to 11 feet.

The breezy afternoon round made scoring difficult. Lydic relied on her chipping and putting to save par after missing greens.

“I just didn’t start well to be able to go low,” Lydic, the only player to finish the day under par, said. “I would be happier tomorrow if I start off with a couple greens and just have a good swing thought.”

Defending champion Lydic’s collegiate confidence is beginning to crystalize. During her sophomore season representing the Demon Deacons on Wake Forest University’s women’s golf team, she registered a pair of consecutive Top-10 finishes as an individual at the Pirate Collegiate Classic and UNCG Collegiate.

“This summer, especially the first [tournament,] I was a little shaky, but the rest of them I felt confident with a couple swing tips from John Lewellen, who is my coach’s husband,” Lydic said. “I just rode out the confidence of the swing.”

Lydic confirmed the aforementioned swing tip is to feel more of a pause at the top of her backswing, Cam Young style. Must be a Wake thing.

Her game is battle-tested on a national stage as well. In June, she captured the Women’s Eastern Golf Association Championship at Occano Golf & Boat Club in Merry Hill, N.C. Her victory, in wire-to-wire fashion across three rounds, was Lydic’s first national title.

“A win is a win. It helps [WAGR] ranking, and that’s all I really care about this summer,” Lydic said. “It’ll help me to be able to play more this season. It’s my coach’s decision and I trust them, but this will help me.”

If history serves, potential is strong for a Lydic repeat tomorrow.

“My putting is usually my strong suit,” Lydic said. “The longer I hit, the more I tend to fall back [with my irons.] I’ll be fine once I just kind of warm up and get going.”

NOTES– In 2025, the BMW GAP Women’s Championship expanded from an 18-hole event to a 54-hole event to comply with World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) eligibility standards.
