Cedarbrook Country Club’s Scott Hughes and Christian Matt captured the 36th Francis X. Hussey Memorial at Rolling Green Golf Club (par 71, 6,271 yards) Tuesday in a sudden-death playoff.

The duo defeated a pair of Wilmington Country Club teams: Anthony Ciconte and Jack Homer, Jeffrey and Matthew Homer, in overtime. Hughes, 17, of Ambler, Pa., and Matt, 18, of Spring House, Pa., birdied the second playoff hole (No. 16, par 3, 129 yards) to prevail. All three teams finished regulation tied at 5-under-par 66.
Hughes and Matt tied for third in the event a year ago.
In the Junior-Junior Division, RiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve’s Timmy Burns and Colby Komancheck also won in a sudden-death playoff. The duo defeated Green Valley Country Club’s Henry and Jack Sokol in overtime that lasted nine holes. Both teams finished regulation tied at 6-over-par 42.
The Francis X. Hussey Memorial is a better-ball of partners event.
Francis X. Hussey, the tournament’s namesake, was a Junior member of Rolling Green. He suffered from congenital heart disease and died in December 1983 while undergoing major heart surgery. He was 13 years old when he died. Francis was a student in the Haverford Township school system, an avid sports fan and an active Junior member at Rolling Green. His courage in the face of his illness was a great inspiration to all who knew him.
