BLUE BELL, Pa. — It’s a path many golfers follow when their game heads south: consult a golf coach or teaching professional for a solution. Mike McLane did just that and reaped the benefits Monday. The Stone Harbor Golf Club member posted 43 points to capture the TEE IT FORWARD Fall Net Championship at Cedarbrook Country Club.
“I was playing horrible for a long time,” McLane, 44, of Westville, N.J., said. “I’m completely revamping the swing. He [Jeff Simpson, assistant professional at Running Deer Golf Club] looked at me and said, ‘I hate to offend you, but we’ve to start all over from the beginning.’ He’s got me hinging on the way back. It’s all basic stuff, but when you’re not in front of a professional, you’re trying to teach yourself.” McLane’s work with Simpson is also creating a mental transformation.
“He wished me good luck this morning. I said ‘I don’t care what I shoot; I’m just out there to enjoy the course,” McLane, who owns a painting company, said. “Maybe there’s something in that. It’s just about being out here with friends. We [McLane and Gregg Owens] met two guys from South Jersey that we had never played with before [Brian Mulvenna and George Hilley]. It’s really about camaraderie; I wasn’t worried about scoring.”
McClane’s relaxed attitude translated into a relatively stress-free front nine Monday. He registered seven pars against two bogeys to turn with 24 points in his coffers. A double bogey on the par 5, 455-yard 10th hole pushed a happy-go-lucky McLane into a panic room. He hit a heavy wedge from 60 yards that stayed on the fairway and sent his fourth stroke over the green. Loose swings on Nos. 11 (par 4, 345 yards) and 12 (par 5, 472 yards) led to bogeys, but McLane leveled his play and returned to front nine form. He made par on his next two holes, reaching the green in regulation and rolling long putts that stopped inches shy of the jar.
McLane rarely plays competitive golf. He does, however, take part in Philadelphia Winter League tournaments, which introduced McLane to Cedarbrook. Monday marked his first Golf Association of Philadelphia event.
“I have high aspirations for the next one,” McLane, who celebrates his 45th birthday tomorrow, said.
The Fall Net Championship, formerly known as the Second Handicap Tournament, is open to players 18 years of age and older with handicap index less than 36.0. The event began in 1946.
This year, the Association adopted the TEE IT FORWARD parameters for the event. Players had the option to play from the Forward tees at 5,557 yards; the Middle tees measuring 6,186 yards or the Back tees at 6,677 yards. It also changed the scoring format to net Stableford.
Founded in 1897, the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) is the oldest regional golf association in the United States and serves as the principal ruling body of amateur golf in its region. Its 145 Member Clubs and 57,000 individual members are spread across parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.
