Mike Quick of Little Mill Country Club and Joe Roeder of Merion Golf Club edged past G. Patrick Dougherty and Scott Storck of Philadelphia Cricket Club in a scorecard playoff to take the title in the 65th Senior Four-Ball Stroke Play at The Legacy Club (par 71, 6,122 yards). Half of the event was contested on July 31, the original date, before inclement weather washed out the afternoon wave. The unfinished rounds were completed Monday.
The USGA-recommended scorecard tiebreaking method focuses on the last nine holes, then the last six and then the last three. Quick and Roeder finished the back nine at 2 under 34. Dougherty and Storck finished at even-par 36.
The Quick, Roeder campaign carded five birdies against one bogey to get to their magic number. On Legacy’s back nine, Roeder, just five days removed from his victory in the 74th Delaware Senior Amateur, made birdie on No. 11 (par 5, 480 yards). Quick, a former wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles and current Eagles radio color commentator, found the team’s final red figure on No. 13 (par 3, 173 yards).
Super-Senior Division
In the Super-Senior Division (par 71, 5,955 yards), J.R. Cattoni of Williamsport Country Club and Ben Cook of Bucknell Golf Club prevailed in a scorecard playoff against Robert Arthur and Bill McGuinness of Tavistock Country Club. The sides matched one another at 2-under-par 69.
Cattoni and Cook finished their back nine at 3 under 33. Arthur and McGuinness finished at 1 under 35.
The winning team carded four birdies against one bogey to get to their final number. Coming in, McGuinness carded red figures on Nos. 15 (par 4, 300 yards) and 17 (par 5, 515 yards).
