In a strong performance, Team GAP reclaimed the Philadelphia Challenge Matches with a 10.5-7.5 victory over the Philadelphia PGA Section at Saucon Valley Country Club (Grace) Tuesday.

Four players led the GAP collective with 2-0 performances.

2023 Middle-Amateur champion Dave Mecca, of Glen Oak Country Club, went undefeated in his first appearance. He teamed up with Little Mill Country Club’s Jack Irons for a 6&4 four-ball victory over Trevor Bensel of Sandy Run Country Club and Brian Bergstol of Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort. Mecca defeated Bergstol 6&5 in singles.

Irons won in singles over Bensel, 1-up, to secure his undefeated performance.

Last-second replacement Rij Patel of the Country Club of York provided a spark with a 2&1 singles victory over Jeff Herb of Waynesborough Country Club. He teamed up with John Barone of Glenmaura National Golf Club in a 3&2 victory over Herb and Brian Kelly. Patel substituted for Michael R. Brown, Jr., who withdrew because of injury.

Senior Jeff Frazier of Carlisle provided a 4-0 honorary team record in a four-day span. He went 2-0 in the Mason-Dixon Matches at Aronimink Golf Club Oct. 14-15. At Saucon Valley, Frazier took out Terry Hatch of Royal Oaks Country Club in singles, 2&1, and paired with LedgeRock Golf Club’s Chris Storck for a 2&1 four-ball victory over Hatch and Linfield National Golf Club’s Hugo Mazzalupi.

The Philadelphia PGA Section leads the all-time series 22-5-4.
