BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Scott Forrester of JC Melrose Country Club, Aaron Fricke of Lancaster Country Club and Joseph Shaw of Philmont Country Club carded respective 3-over-par 75s to top the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s 66th Caddie Tournament at Saucon Valley Country Club’s Weyhill Course (par 72, 6,356 yards) Monday.
“The putts were sinking,” Forrester, 18, of Cheltenham, Pa., said. “I got use to the greens early on. I shot 1 over on the front, and going into (No.) 10, I got it right back to even (par).”
Forrester, a first-year caddie at JC Melrose, knocked a 9-iron 150 yards to 15 feet on the par 4, 393-yard 10th hole and executed the red figure putt. A poisonous combination of putter problems and approach angst led to four consecutive bogeys, putting Forrester, an incoming freshman at Drexel University, at 4 over with four holes remaining. On No. 15 (par 4, 361 yards), he hit a pitching wedge uphill 110 yards to the green’s top tier. Forrester then rolled in a left-to-right breaking 40-footer for birdie.
“I needed a turnaround,” Forrester said. “I got the line as best as I could. I really wasn’t hoping for it to go in, but it stayed on the line and went in.”
A hot putter is what Fricke relies on to be competitive. Its temperature peaked at Weyhill Monday.
“I putted well,” Fricke, 17, of Denver, Pa., said. “The greens were nice. It’s fun. I was happy with my round.”
Fricke, too, started on the back nine and posted 11 straight pars, including invigorating saves on Nos. 15 (par 4, 361 yards) and 18 (par 5, 529 yards). On the first, he caught the front bunker with a pitching wedge from 125 yards. Fricke, an incoming senior at Garden Spa High School, splashed out and sunk a 15-footer to save par. On No. 18 (par 5, 529 yards), he hammered a 4-iron 200 yards, only to see his golf ball roll off a false front. Fricke escalated a putt uphill and drained a 20-footer for 5.
Three hiccups heading in shoved Fricke into a 75 bind. He carded bogeys on Nos. 3 (par 4, 311 yards), 5 (par 3, 167 yards) and 7 (par 4, 363 yards).
“I didn’t hit a lot of fairways or greens,” Fricke, a fifth-year caddie at Lancaster, said of the miscues.
Starting on the back nine, Shaw, a six-year caddie at Philmont, registered 13 greens in regulation and exercised a putting stroke that produced 13 pars.
“I hit the ball well all day,” Shaw, who resides in the Somerton section of Philadelphia, Pa., said. “A couple of putts fell for me. I got up-and-down a lot. I hit a lot of greens. That’s what it came down to mostly.”
Shaw’s lone birdie of the day occurred on the par 4, 352-yard 13th hole. Shaw hit a gap wedge 118 yards to 15 feet and canned the uphill putt.
Shaw posted a pair of bogeys on each side. A three-putt on No. 11 (par 4, 368 yards) and a missed green on No. 14 (par 3, 170 yards) were outward nine setbacks. Shaw hit a pitching wedge 130 yards to 25 feet right of the No. 4 (par 4, 361 yards) flagstick. He ran the birdie try six feet past and missed the comebacker.
Shaw, 18, righted the flatstick on the par 3, 167-yard No. 5 by executing a one-putt following a missed green. His fourth and final circle on the scorecard came on No. 8 (par 4, 356 yards). Shaw drove his golf ball into the fescue, axed an iron onto the fairway, reached the green on his third stroke and failed to execute an eight-footer for par.
To keep his golf game sharp in the summer, Shaw traverses his Philmont every Monday — “from sunrise to sunset, if there isn’t an outing.” He is an incoming sophomore at Penn State-Abington and competes on the school’s golf team.
Originating in 1928, the Caddie Tournament is open to all caddies who have been regularly employed at Member Clubs for at least 30 days prior to the event.
