History

Founded in 1928, Yardley Country Club is one of the most historic and respected private golf clubs in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Located in the heart of Yardley, PA, the club has offered exceptional golf, dining, and member experiences for nearly a century. Today, it continues to preserve its rich traditions while providing a championship-caliber golf experience.

The vision for Yardley Country Club began with Edward A. Rembe, a prominent local resident. While horseback riding across the Harper family farm, Rembe recognized the property’s golfing potential. He then shared his idea with landowner Jesse E. Harper, Colonel Stephen H. Barlow, and Counselor William A. Moore.

Together, they incorporated Yardley Country Club in early 1928. Soon afterward, founding members purchased shares that helped finance the acquisition of the 131-acre Harper Farm. As a result, the club established the foundation for one of the premier private golf clubs near Philadelphia.

The property included a remarkable 18th-century stone farmhouse. The building was more than 200 years old and served as Yardley Country Club’s original clubhouse from 1928 to 1968.

A Findlay Golf Course Design

Yardley Country Club selected renowned Scottish-born golf professionals and architects Alexander and Frederick Findlay to design its golf course. Rather than dramatically reshaping the land, the Findlays embraced its natural character. Instead, Frederick Findlay designed the course directly on the property without relying on formal blueprints.

Consequently, the layout preserved the rolling terrain and natural drainage of the Harper Farm. These features still define the course today. They also make Yardley one of Pennsylvania’s finest examples of classic golf course architecture.

The 18-hole golf course officially opened on April 29, 1929. It measured approximately 6,325 yards from the championship tees. Notably, the course remains close to its original length today.

A Historic Place in Pennsylvania Golf

Just one year later, Yardley Country Club gained regional recognition by hosting a memorable exhibition match. Golf legends Gene Sarazen and Johnny Farrell, the 1928 U.S. Open Champion, headlined the event.

Nearly 400 spectators, including New Jersey Governor Morgan F. Larson, attended the exhibition. During the match, Sarazen thrilled the crowd with four birdies and a remarkable 350-yard drive. As a result, the event established Yardley Country Club as one of the premier golf destinations in the Philadelphia region.

Today, Yardley Country Club proudly celebrates nearly 100 years of golf history. From its beginnings on the Harper Farm to its beautifully preserved Frederick Findlay-designed golf course, the club remains one of the premier private country clubs in Bucks County.
