History

Founded in 1896, The Springhaven Club is one of the oldest private golf clubs in Pennsylvania and the first country club established in Delaware County. Located in Wallingford, Pennsylvania, the club has built a remarkable legacy of championship golf, historic architecture, and family traditions. Today, this private golf club continues to honor its pioneering history while providing an exceptional member experience.

A Pioneer in American Golf

The Springhaven Club traces its beginnings to Eleanor Reed, whose introduction to golf during a trip to Europe inspired her to establish Delaware County’s first golf club. Working alongside fellow golf enthusiasts, she helped lease Springhaven Farm in Media, where the club opened its original nine-hole course. As a result, Springhaven quickly became one of the earliest centers for golf in the Philadelphia region.

Membership grew rapidly, and the club relocated to its current Wallingford property in 1903. Soon afterward, members unveiled a new 18-hole championship course and an elegant clubhouse in 1904. Golf historians credit Ida Dixon with designing the course, making her the first female golf course architect in the United States and possibly the world. The club also welcomed Horace Rawlins, winner of the inaugural 1895 U.S. Open Championship, as its first golf professional. His leadership helped establish Springhaven as one of the nation’s respected private golf clubs.

Today, The Springhaven Club combines more than 125 years of history with outstanding modern amenities. Members enjoy championship golf, tennis, swimming, dining, and social events in a beautifully preserved clubhouse that has welcomed generations of families. Whether competing in a tournament, enjoying a casual round, or gathering for a special occasion, members experience the tradition and hospitality that have defined this private golf club since 1896. Above all, The Springhaven Club remains one of the Philadelphia area’s most historic and distinguished private country clubs.

As a proud Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) Member Club, The Springhaven Club remains an important part of the region’s golfing heritage.
