Private East Region

History

Located in Ambler, Pennsylvania, Squires Golf Club has been one of the region’s premier private golf clubs since 1964. A group of passionate golfers founded the club with one goal: create a place where the game always comes first. Today, this private golf club continues to deliver championship golf, lasting friendships, and a tradition built around the love of the sport.

A Golf-First Vision

The story of Squires Golf Club began in 1962, when renowned architect George Fazio started building a public golf course on 140 acres in Ambler. Before construction finished, Herman Watkins and a group of fellow golfers purchased the property. Together, they established a private club devoted entirely to golf. The course officially opened on May 16, 1964.

The founders wanted a club that valued great golf over unnecessary formality. They kept membership intentionally limited to encourage quicker rounds and stronger friendships. They also welcomed golfers from many backgrounds who shared a passion for the game. George Fazio designed an 18-hole championship course with rolling fairways, large undulating greens, and strategic shot values. Soon after opening, the club adjusted several holes to improve playability while preserving the course’s challenge.

A Tradition That Continues

Today, Squires Golf Club remains one of the Philadelphia region’s most respected private golf clubs. Members enjoy championship golf, excellent practice facilities, a welcoming clubhouse, and a full schedule of tournaments and social events. Although the club has grown over the years, it continues to honor the founders’ original vision.

Whether members compete in club championships, enjoy a casual round with friends, or walk George Fazio’s classic layout, they experience a club where golf always comes first. Above all, Squires Golf Club continues to preserve its traditions while providing an exceptional private golf experience for every generation.

As a proud Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) Member Club, Squires Golf Club remains an important part of the Philadelphia area’s golf community.
