History
Philadelphia Country Club was founded in 1890, making it one of the oldest country clubs in the United States. They are one of four founding clubs of the Golf Association of Philadelphia.
That vision became reality in 1927 when renowned architect William S. Flynn designed the Spring Mill Course in Gladwyne. The club eventually consolidated its operations at the new property, creating a permanent home that continues to honor its remarkable heritage while embracing the future.
The Philadelphia Country Club Course
The Spring Mill Course showcases William S. Flynn’s timeless design philosophy. Rolling fairways, strategic bunkering, and beautifully contoured greens reward precision, creativity, and thoughtful course management. At the same time, the walkable layout blends naturally with the property’s rolling terrain to create a memorable championship experience.
Outstanding conditioning remains a hallmark of the Philadelphia Country Club course. In addition, the club added the Tom Fazio-designed Centennial Nine in 1990, expanding its golf facilities while preserving the character of the original championship layout.
Championship Golf and Lasting Traditions
Golf has always been at the heart of club life. Members enjoy tournaments, practice facilities, professional instruction, and a vibrant calendar of competitive events throughout the season. Beyond the course, racquet sports, swimming, dining, fitness, and family activities create a welcoming community for every generation.
That tradition of excellence extends to championship golf. Over the years, the club has hosted the 1899 U.S. Women’s Amateur, the 1939 U.S. Open, the 2003 U.S. Women’s Amateur, and the 2005 U.S. Amateur, cementing its place among America’s great championship venues.
Philadelphia Country Club Today
Today, Philadelphia Country Club remains one of the nation’s premier private clubs. Exceptional golf, outstanding amenities, and a commitment to excellence define the member experience.
More than 135 years after its founding, the club continues to honor its remarkable history while investing in the future. Its blend of championship golf, architectural significance, and enduring traditions makes it a treasured member of the GAP region.
