The History of Merion Golf Club

Merion Golf Club has been a cornerstone of American golf since its founding in 1896. The club began at the Merion Cricket Club before establishing its own home in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. In 1912, members purchased land in nearby Haverford Township and commissioned renowned architect Hugh Wilson to create a new golf course.

Wilson designed the East Course, which opened in 1912 and quickly gained national recognition for its strategic design and exceptional character. A decade later, the club added the West Course, also designed by Wilson. Together, the courses established Merion as one of the most respected golf destinations in the country.

A Classic Design That Shaped Golf
