Private East Region

History

Kennett Square Golf & Country Club began with a simple idea and a passionate group of local golfers. In 1922, 26 community members gathered at the Kennett Square Fire House to discuss building a golf club for the growing Chester County community. Their enthusiasm quickly turned into action. Within months, they raised funding, purchased land, and officially established the club.

John M. Chalfant led the early effort and became the club’s first president. His leadership helped transform a vision into reality. By the spring of 1923, construction had begun on both the clubhouse and the golf course, laying the foundation for one of the region’s most enduring private clubs.

A Donald Ross Classic

The club selected legendary architect Donald Ross to design its original nine-hole course. Several holes opened for play later in 1923, and members quickly recognized the quality of the layout. As interest in the club continued to grow, additional land became available across the road. That expansion allowed the course to grow into a full 18-hole layout, which officially opened in 1940.

Today, the par-71 course winds through the rolling hills of the Toughkenamon Valley. Mature trees, strategic bunkering, natural elevation changes, and carefully maintained greens reward thoughtful shot-making throughout the round. In addition, modern restoration projects have preserved the course’s classic character while enhancing playing conditions for today’s golfers.

A Tradition of Competition and Community

For more than a century, Kennett Square Golf & Country Club has balanced championship golf with a welcoming club atmosphere. Members enjoy an active golf calendar, professional instruction, practice facilities, and one of the area’s strongest junior golf programs. The club also offers tennis, pickleball, swimming, dining, and year-round social events for families of all ages.

Over the years, the club has hosted prestigious competitions, including U.S. Open qualifiers and regional championships. These events reflect the quality of both the course and the membership’s ongoing commitment to excellence.

Kennett Square Golf & Country Club Today

Today, Kennett Square Golf & Country Club continues to build on the vision established more than 100 years ago. Members enjoy championship golf on a beautifully maintained Donald Ross layout while benefiting from modern amenities and an active club community.

Although the club has grown over the decades, its original purpose remains unchanged. Outstanding golf, lasting friendships, and a commitment to preserving one of Chester County’s historic courses continue to define the Kennett Square Golf & Country Club experience.
