History

John F. Byrne Golf Club has served Philadelphia golfers for generations. Located in Northeast Philadelphia, the course remains one of the city’s most recognizable public golf facilities. The City of Philadelphia acquired the property in the early 1960s and later renamed it in honor of Philadelphia Councilman John F. Byrne. Today, the club continues to provide affordable and accessible golf for players of all ages and abilities.

A new chapter began in 2019 when First Tee – Greater Philadelphia assumed management of the facility. Since then, significant improvements have transformed the property while preserving its role as a community golf destination. Renovations have included a new irrigation system, clubhouse upgrades, improved cart paths, and expanded learning opportunities for golfers throughout the region.

A Course Designed for Every Golfer

The course traces its roots to architect Alexander Findlay and features a layout that welcomes players of every skill level. Byberry Creek winds through the property and comes into play on numerous holes, creating both scenic views and strategic challenges throughout the round. Oversized bunkers, mature trees, and well-positioned greens encourage thoughtful shot-making while remaining enjoyable for recreational golfers.

Multiple teeing options make the course accessible to beginners while still providing a rewarding experience for experienced players. As a result, John F. Byrne Golf Club continues to attract thousands of golfers each season.

A Home for First Tee and Adaptive Golf

What truly sets John F. Byrne Golf Club apart is its commitment to growing the game. As a First Tee – Greater Philadelphia facility, the course serves as a year-round center for youth golf and life skills education. Young people learn the fundamentals of golf while developing confidence, leadership, and character through First Tee programming.

The club also supports inclusive opportunities for golfers of all backgrounds and abilities. Through partnerships with organizations such as the Golf Association of Philadelphia, the facility helps provide access to programs like GAP Adaptive Golf, which introduces and expands golf opportunities for individuals with physical, cognitive, sensory, and neurological challenges.

John F. Byrne Golf Club Today

Today, John F. Byrne Golf Club stands as more than a public golf course. It serves as a community resource where golfers can learn, compete, and connect through the game. Families, juniors, beginners, and experienced players all find a welcoming environment on the course and in the clubhouse.

By combining affordable public golf with youth development and inclusive programming through GAP, John F. Byrne Golf Club continues to make a lasting impact throughout the Philadelphia region. Its commitment to accessibility, education, and community ensures that the game remains open to future generations.
