Huntingdon Valley Country Club

Huntingdon Valley Country Club ranks among the oldest and most influential golf clubs in Pennsylvania. Founded in 1897, the club has played an important role in the growth of golf throughout the Philadelphia region for more than 125 years. Today, the club combines a rich history with championship golf and a tradition of excellence that continues to shape its reputation.

The story of golf at Huntingdon Valley began several years before the club officially opened. Percy C. Madeira, who later chaired the club’s first Green Committee, introduced friends to the game using a unique practice device. The golf ball attached to a cord allowed players to measure their drives without leaving the yard. The idea sparked local interest and inspired Madeira and his friends to create a small nine-hole course across his property in Huntingdon Valley.

Although the original layout was simple, it introduced many local residents to the game and laid the foundation for what would become Huntingdon Valley Country Club.

The Club’s Early Growth

Club members officially organized Huntingdon Valley Country Club in 1897 and built a nine-hole course in nearby Rydal. Scottish golf professional John Reid designed the original layout, bringing his experience from the early days of American golf to the growing club.

Membership increased quickly during the club’s first two years. As interest grew, the club purchased neighboring property and transformed the historic Noble Mansion into its second clubhouse. Members also expanded the golf course to 18 holes, creating one of the longest and most challenging layouts in the United States at the time.

The new course stretched more than 6,300 yards, an impressive distance for the era. Long par 4s and demanding par 5s challenged even the best players, helping many Huntingdon Valley members develop into some of the strongest amateur golfers in the Philadelphia area.

A Tradition of Championship Golf

From its earliest years, Huntingdon Valley Country Club earned a reputation for competitive golf. The demanding course rewarded accuracy, thoughtful strategy, and consistent ball striking. Golfers who mastered the layout often found other courses less challenging.

Over the decades, the club has continued to build on that tradition. Championship conditions, outstanding facilities, and a commitment to excellence have made Huntingdon Valley one of the region’s premier private golf clubs. The club has also hosted numerous prestigious amateur and professional competitions, further strengthening its place in Pennsylvania golf history.

Huntingdon Valley Country Club Today

More than a century after its founding, Huntingdon Valley Country Club remains one of the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s most respected member clubs. Members enjoy a beautifully maintained championship golf course, exceptional practice facilities, fine dining, and a welcoming clubhouse that reflects the club’s long history.

Huntingdon Valley joined the Golf Association of Philadelphia and the Women’s Golf Association of Philadelphia in 1898, the fifth club to be elected to membership in both.
