History

Open seven days a week, Bala Golf Club is the closest private golf club to Center City Philadelphia. Founded in 1901, Bala Golf Club traces its roots to 1893, when founders George Reach and Charles Hickman first became inspired by golf at Philadelphia Country Club. Seeking to establish their own club, they acquired farmland along Belmont Avenue, an area then accessible by trolley and rail.

In 1901, Bala Golf Club was officially incorporated and quickly became part of Philadelphia’s early golf landscape. Over time, many neighboring clubs relocated to the suburbs, while Bala remained rooted in its original location, preserving its historic identity.

Moreover, when Philadelphia Country Club moved in 1939, Bala inherited several of its greens, many of which are still in use today.

Initially, the course began as a small nine-hole layout across rolling farmland. However, in 1922, renowned architect William S. Flynn redesigned and expanded the course into an 18-hole layout on the same footprint. His design remains the foundation of the course played today.

Set on rolling parkland, the course features pines, creeks, and wildlife near Center City Philadelphia. Bala offers one of the region’s most accessible and fastest-paced private golf experiences. With easy access to Bala Cynwyd, Philadelphia, and the Main Line, members fit golf into a busy lifestyle.

Furthermore, Bala Golf Club provides a variety of membership opportunities designed for today’s lifestyle. Members enjoy an active social calendar, exceptional dining, and a historic William S. Beyond golf, Bala offers a strong social community with year-round programming. From holiday dinners to summer picnics and fireworks, the club offers events for members of all ages. These events also make Bala an ideal setting for entertaining family and guests. Additionally, Bala features a recently renovated event facility suitable for weddings, corporate meetings, galas, mitzvahs, anniversaries, and private celebrations.
