Philling The GAP: Course Rating

One of the added benefits of being a GAP Member Club is Course Rating. Course Rating is included at no additional cost to GAP Member Clubs.

Some key facts and figures about GAP and its course-rating process.

  • On a given day, up to 12 volunteers will work together to complete the rating.
  • GAP measures each course using state-of-the-art GPS technology prior to the rating to ensure accurate yardages.
  • The USGA mandates courses get rated every 10 years, GAP performs ratings on a seven-year cycle.
  • Courses can request a rating if there were recent changes to the course.
  • GAP will complete 40 course ratings in 2024.
  • GAP currently has 71 course-rating volunteers.

Beginning in 2020, course rating data is now used in Stroke Index recommendations. A course’s stroke index is only changed at the club request, so a new rating does not always mean a new stroke index.
