Gregg Angelillo of Moselem Springs GC aced the par 4, 314-yard 13th hole during his second-round match against Glenn Smeraglio of Mercer Oaks GC. It is the first hole-in-one on a par 4 at Saucon Valley CC, according to club officials.
“To be a part of the history of this club is amazing,” Angelillo, 39, said. “I hope someday my kids get to play here and they’ll be talking about the guy who hit it in the hole on 13. It’s an amazing thing.”
Angelillo’s drive landed short of the green, rolled 10 feet and coasted straight into the bottom of the jar. It was the third ace of his career, but first on a par 4.
During his first-round match against Jim Rattigan of Schuylkill CC, Angelillo, of Basking Ridge, N.J., elected to hit driver from the right-side of the tee-box, nuked it to the rear of the green and two putted for birdie. He used the same club one round later, this time from the opposite side.
“My thought process was get it around the green and see what I can do with it,” he said. “I kind of choked down on it a little more in hopes that it would stay on the green. It was a good swing and good ball flight. I knew it was good, but who the heck knocks it in on a par 4?”
Angelillo went on to edge Smeraglio, 2-up. He will now face Jeff Osberg of Llanerch CC in the quarterfinals.
“In hindsight, I needed it (the ace on No. 13) to win the match,” he said. “It was something that really carried me through the entire match. Winning today was big. I started to drive the ball better and get some confidence.”
