Michael McDermott, GAP’s reigning Player of the Year, fired a one-over par 72 on Friday to finish with a two-day total of 148 and capture the 19th annual Middle-Amateur Championship at Coatesville CC (par 71, 6,425 yards).

McDermott started the day four shots back of Coatesville CC’s Doug Zelner, but went 37-35 for a final day 72 to finish one shot ahead of Zelner. Zelner finish the 36-hole event with a 149 total.

McDermott, the 26-year-old defending Pennsylvania Amateur titleholder, bogeyed two of his first six holes, and was in trouble at No. 7, a par 4 measuring 327 yards, after blocking his drive right, into the trees. But McDermott chipped left into the fairway and knocked his approach shot to five feet. He proceeded to sink the par putt.

“That got my round back on track,” said McDermott, who plays out of Llanerch CC. “I knew I couldn’t go three back of Zelner to have a chance.”

Zelner parred his first seven holes but double bogeyed the par 4, 364-yard ninth and the par 3, 219-yard 12th. The 39-year-old West Chester resident had a chance to force a playoff with a birdie on the par 4, 389-yard 18th, but Zelner watched his putt slip right.

“Out here double bogeys are like rabbits,” said Zelner. “They multiply.”

Glenn Smeraglio of Yardley CC, Warren Smith of Fieldstone GC and Roc Irey of Cedarbrook CC finished in a three-way tie for third with a two-day total of 150.

This was Irey’s first appearance in the Mid-Am since a runner-up performance in the 1992 event.

Defending champion Darrell Clayton of Cavaliers finished in a tie for 16th with a 155 total.

The top 5 players and ties are except for the 2002 Patterson Cup and Amateur Championship.

This was the first time since the event’s inception in 1984 that the Middle-Amateur was a two-day stroke play competition. Prior to this year, the Mid-Am was a one-day stroke event. This was also the first time players 25 years of age and older were eligible for the Mid-Am field. In past years, players has to be 30 years and older.
