WAYNE, Pa. – And the last shall be first.
Neil and Michael McDermott, of Llanerch CC and Merion GC, respectively, finishing in early evening shadows in last foursome of the day, fired a 70 (38-32) to win the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s 94th Father & Son (Older) Championship Thursday at St. Davids Golf Club (par 70, 6,229 yards).
Their score tied Jarrett Kling and his stepson, Gui Costin of Merion GC, for the lead. Kling and Costin, whose 70 (36-34) posted early, had held up most of the day, were not present for a playoff. Thus, the McDermotts were awarded the championship.
The tournament, which dates back to 1911, pairs fathers with sons 18 years or older, in a selected drive, alternate shot format.
For the McDermott family, it was their third Father & Son title in the last four years. McDermott and another son, Kevin, won the tournament in 2002 and 2004. The Neil/Kevin duo actually were in a four-way tie for second place Thursday in this year’s championship, carding a 35-37—72 in the morning.
It was Neil McDermott’s fourth Father & Son title, having won the Father & Son (Younger) with a third son, Brian, in 1998.
He looked at the 38-32 winning score as “a tale of two nines.” They started on No. 10, and carded three three-putts and a double bogey. ” It was pretty bad golf,” Neil said. “It was sloppy. We made a lot of mistakes.”
But the McDermotts birdied the first hole on the back nine, “and that helped a lot to change the momentum,” Neil said. Added Michael, “We’ve played enough golf together to know we were capable of coming back on the back nine.”
And come back they did, with birdies on No. 4 and No. 8 and, after Neil nailed a 7-wood to three feet on the 217-yard, par-3, No.9, it looked like they would take the title outright. But Michael’s slippery, three-footer lipped out for a round of even-par 70.
“What’s really special,” Neil said, “is having won three different GAP Father and Sons with three different sons. That’s very, very special.” McDermott is the Golf Association of Philadelphia President.
Thomas and George Finn of Cavaliers CC and Sussex Pines GC took low net in the championship competition with a 64 (82-18).
Thomas and Tom Conboy, Jr., of Sandy Run CC won the Super-Senior competition with a 77 (40-37), playing from shorter tees at 5,694 yards.
John and John Donohue, Sr., of Rolling Green GC and Sandy Run CC took home the Super-Senior net prize with a 67 (78-11).
