Links GC’s Badger wins Chapman Cup

 PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa.–Ron Badger of Links GC fired a net 3-under-par 69 Wednesday to win the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s 66^th Chapman Memorial Cup at Whitemarsh Valley CC (par 72, 6,383 yards). He won in a match of cards with Brendan Kearney of Sandy Run CC.

  Badger carded a gross 77 with a handicap of eight for his 69. Kearney posted an 80 with a handicap of 11.

  Kearney almost won the cup, however, with an unusual eagle three at the 501-yard, par 5 11^th hole, where he hit “3-wood, 3-wood, 3-wood, right into the cup.” The third 3-wood was from 170 yards.

  For Badger, it was his first GAP tournament win. “I hit my drives real well and hit good irons,” he said, “but my putting was not too stellar.” His feeling after the win? “Wonderful.”

  The tournament, a senior net championship for players ages 55 and over, is named after Frank H. Chapman, long time GAP secretary-treasurer who died in 1955 at age 88.

  Mike Rose of Talamore at Oak Terrace CC (37-34) tied David Brookreson (33-38) of Huntingdon Valley CC at 1-under-par 71 for the low gross score.

  In the 55-59 age group, Kearney won the low net prize. In the 60 and over age group, Herbert Gordon of Doylestown CC took low net honors with a 75-5-70. O. Gordon Brewer, Jr., of Pine Valley GC was low gross with a 2-over-par 74.

  Winner of the Super-Senior Division for golfers 65 and over playing from shorter tees (5,912 yards) was Ray Rose of Links GC with a 2-under-par 70 in a match of cards with Warren Deakins of Philadelphia Country Club. Rose posted an 85 with a 15 handicap; Deakins shot a 78 with an eight handicap.

  James Sherratt of Old York CC was Super-Senior low gross with a 40-37-77.
