Tom Conboy, the 2009 Volunteer of the Year and 1972 Amateur Championship runner-up, died July 28. He was 95.
| Obituary |
Conboy, started in golf as a caddie at Eagle Lodge Country Club (Union League Liberty Hill today). He practiced every day after week and soon became a fixture on the GAP circuit. A Sandy Run Country Club member since 1964, Conboy qualified for match play in the Amateur Championship on 15 occasions over a three-decade span, including seven consecutive appearances (1955-61). He gained the semifinals in 1961, falling to GAP Hall of Famer Howard Everitt, 2-up, at Manufacturers’ Golf & Country Club. In 1972, Conboy lost to Raymond Thompson, 5&3, in the Final at Aronimink Golf Club. He also finished as runner-up in the 1950 Junior Boys’ Championship.
GAPTV spotlighted Conboy for a feature in 2012. GAP Magazine will pay tribute to Conboy in its upcoming Fall 2025 edition.
