Founded in 1897, GAP continues to champion golf for the benefit of the game in its region and beyond.
Kevin Scherr sure had it going Wednesday at Elkview Country Club (par 72, 6,672 yards).
The Allentown Municipal and Youngstown State University golfer carded the day’s lone under-par round (1-under 71) to earn medalist honors in a GAP Open Championship Qualifying event.
On the day, the cut line stopped at 4-over 76. Thirteen players earn invitations to the championship proper. Nine of those players ended up being amateurs, with four pros earning invites.
The 118th GAP Open will be played July 19-20 at Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course. The #GAPOpen, the Association’s third oldest championship, is a two-day, 36-hole stroke play event. There is a cut to the low 60 players and ties after Round One.
For Scherr, the 22-year-old amateur from Nazareth, Pa., four birdies got the job done on Wednesday. After birdie on Elkview’s par-5, 487-yard opener, he also carded red numbers on Nos. 4, 8 and 17.
GAP

It serves as the principal ruling body of amateur golf in its region. The Association’s 300 Member Clubs and 80,000 individual members are spread across the Eastern half of Pennsylvania and parts of Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey. The GAP’s mission is to promote, preserve and protect the game of golf.
