The Skulk Supremacy: a suggested title for the AGA/GAP Super-Senior Coal Scuttle Championship documentary, should fairway filmmakers ever pursue.
Fox Hill Country Club captured its fifth-straight title at home Aug. 21. It filed a 9-over-par 222 to edge Emanon Country Club by a stroke. Len Coleman, representing Emanon, earned the event’s individual title with a 4-under-par 67.
The top three of four scores count toward the team total. The AGA/GAP Super-Senior Coat Scuttle Championship, now in its fifth year, is contested on the defending champion’s turf. Fox Hill is trending toward permanent site status.
“On a good day from the white tees here, we can shoot under par. That gives us an edge over a lot of courses,” Ed Hennigan, who led the Fox Hill contingent with a 2-over-par 73, said. “It’s nice to have it at Fox Hill. We know the course so well. But it’s getting a little harder; we’re getting older and the younger [Super-Senior golfers] are coming up. It was a close finish this time.”
Hennigan, as well as teammates Bill Lawler and Jim Hoover, all birdied No. 18 (par 4, 330 yards) to inch Fox Hill ahead of Emanon the leaderboard. Lawler’s 3 afforded a 4-over-par 75. Hennigan’s 10-footer hung on the lip for two seconds before deciding to drop into the jar.
Hoover, too, experienced a nail-biting finish. Playing in the day’s last group, he “fell asleep” on No. 17 (par 4, 334 yards) while standing at 1 over.
“I was only 100 yards from the green,” Hoover, 65, of Dallas, Pa., said. “I chunked my second shot, bladed my third shot, bladed my fourth shot and finally got one on the green to make a 7. It was one of those holes where you just want to get out and get done.”
Fox Hill crossed the finish line in first place thanks to Hoover’s 15-footer for birdie on No. 18, which followed an 8-iron shot from 144 yards to a front hole location. Leave it to the club’s reigning Super-Senior champion to ensure another Super-Senior victory.
“Our team was a strong team,” Hoover, a Fox Hill member of seven years, said. “This was my first year playing [in the Super-Senior Coal Scuttle]. Now I see why those guys win every year; they’re such competitors. We’ll be ready to go again next year. The group we have is very competitive.”
Thomas Gill, last year’s Super-Senior celebrity for Fox Hill, rounded out the team with an 8-over-par 79. Overall, seven teams competed in the event.
