Team GAP set for 56th Williamson Cup

GAP will circle the wagons — and the birdies, of course — when it travels to Country Club of Buffalo in Buffalo, N.Y. for the 56th Williamson Cup.

One of the nation’s premier Junior golf events, the Williamson Cup features teams from eight state or regional golf associations competing in 36 holes of stroke play. The low three scores on each four-man team counting toward the team total.

The Williamson Cup was established in 1964 by A. Fred Williamson, in memory of his father, one of the original founders of the famed Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y. It was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

GAP holds seven titles overall (1969, 1984, 1987-88, 1991, 1993, 2000). Below is a look at its 2021 Williamson Cup team.

2021 accomplishments: Won the 22nd Christman Cup at Chester Valley Golf Club; carded rounds of 72 and 67 … Harry Hammond Award winner with a score of 285 … qualified as the No. 7 seed in the 107th Junior Boys’ Championship at Overbrook Golf Club; lost to Phoenixville Country Club’s Morgan Lofland, 1-up, in the quarterfinals … tied for ninth in the Jock MacKenzie Memorial at Sandy Run Country Club … currently ranked second in the Junior Player of the Year standings with 355 points.

Morgan Lofland, Phoenixville Country Club

Age: 18
Hometown: Paoli, Pa.
School: Recent Conestoga High School graduate, incoming freshman at Penn State University
2021 accomplishments: Won the Pennsylvania Golf Association Junior Boys’ Championship at Hershey Country Club; defeated Out Door Country Club’s Karl Frisk on the second sudden-death playoff hole … medalist and runner-up in the 107th Junior Boys’ Championship at Overbrook Golf Club; lost to The 1912 Club’s Josh Ryan, 4&3, in the Final … semifinalist in the 121st BMW Philadelphia Amateur Championship at Cedarbrook Country Club; lost to Huntingdon Valley Country Club’s Conor McGrath, 3&2 … currently ranked first in the Junior Player of the Year standings with 420 points.

Jake Maddaloni, Aronimink Golf Club

Hometown: Newtown Square, Pa.
School: Recent The Haverford School graduate, incoming freshman at Bucknell University
2021 accomplishments: Runner-up in the 37th Jock MacKenzie Memorial … won the 35th Francis X. Hussey Memorial, at Rolling Green Golf Club alongside Elmhurst Country Club’s Billy Pabst … tied for eighth in the 22nd Christman Cup … tied for second in the Harry Hammond Award standings with a score of 291 … currently ranked fifth in the Junior Player of the Year standings with 239.17 points.

Billy Pabst, Elmhurst Country Club

Age: 18
Hometown: Roaring Brook Township, Pa.
School: North Pocono High School (senior)
2021 accomplishments: Qualified as the No. 5 seed in the 107th Junior Boys’ Championship; lost to Wilmington Country Club’s Matthew Homer, 4&2, in the Round of 16 … tied for fourth in the 22nd Christman Cup … qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur … won the 35th Francis X. Hussey Memorial alongside Jake Maddaloni … currently ranked seventh in the Junior Player of the Year standings with 230 points.
