Choi takes Girls’ Division, Boys’ championship to be determined with a playoff taking place at later date

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – Megan Choi hasn’t had the best summer. She’d be the first to tell you that.

But she hasn’t lost hope. She’s kept putting in the work. Believing that her opportunity would come.

Standing at 147 yards with a 7-iron on No. 9 (par 4, 310 yards), the final hole of the championship, she was looking for her championship moment. She got it.

The 7-iron bounced to 10 feet from the hole. She canned the putt to secure her first 36-hole tournament victory.

“I’ve never had a putt for birdie to win a tournament in my golf life,” Choi said. “So this is my first and I felt it was a really strong finish. I am happy with it.”

Choi fired a final round of 73 to take the 43rd Delaware Junior Girls’ title with a two-day total of 3-over-par 145.

Choi’s winning birdie putt.

“Honestly, this win means a lot,” Choi, 15, of Penn Valley, Pa., said. “This summer I have been struggling to break 80 and have been struggling with one part of my game in each tournament I play in. It all came together today and I am really happy about that.”

The rising sophomore at Harriton High School beat Round 1 leader Krista Brosius of Maple Dale Country Club by four shots.

“I didn’t want to think too much about what place I was in throughout the round,” Choi, of Green Valley Country Club, said. “Thinking like that gets into my head. I was thinking about whatever I needed to in order to get the ball onto the green and make the putt and worry about where I placed at the end of the round.”

Adversity came in with a more than two hour weather delay. She thought it through and was prepared to come out of the delay and succeed.

“I was trying to stay as much in rhythm as I could in the delay,” Choi, who finished tied for 10th in last year’s PIAA High School Championships, said. “I was trying to swing a little easier after the restart and not try to hit super hard shots. I wanted to get the ball anywhere on the green and get the first putt close to the hole.”

Choi innocently asked when handed the trophy what she was supposed to with it? Moving forward she will know what to do because she has the experience now.

“Winning this tournament helps my confidence for sure,” Choi said. “It reinforces that I am a good player, I know what I am doing out here and there is no need to have any doubt.”

Boys’ Division

After 36 holes, Charlie Barrickman of Radley Run Country Club and Chris Parrish of Running Deer Golf Club are deadlocked at 5 under. Due to weather, the playoff could not be started. The playoff will take place at a time and date to be determined that is agreeable for both Barrickman and Parrish.
