Herr earns medallist honors at Jr.-Jr. Boys’ Championship

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa.– Zachary Herr of Jericho National GC fired an even-par 35 to earn low medallist honors at the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s 60th Junior-Junior Boys’ Championship Tuesday at Phoenixville CC (par 35, 2,659 yards).

Herr, a soon-to-be eight grader at Newtown Middle School, topped the 45-player field by three strokes and even managed to card an eagle on the par 5 8th hole (420 yards) after knocking a 6-iron from 175 yards out to within 10 feet for an eagle putt.

“This gives me more confidence going into tomorrow,” said Herr of earning the No. 1 seed for the match play portion of the event. “I think I’m stronger at match play so we’ll see what happens.”

The 13-year-old said his experiences in match play in his club events at Jericho serve as a big advantage for him heading into tomorrow’s portion of the event.

But for today, the flatstick seemed to be his strongest ally.

“I putted really well today,” he said.

When the day came to an end the cut landed at 43 with a four-man playoff for two spots to make it into the championship flight.

Thirty-two players advanced to match play on Wednesday, a single elimination event that concludes with an 18-hole match play format for all four flights on Thursday.

Founded in 1897, the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) is the oldest regional golf association in the United States and serves as the principal ruling body of amateur golf in its region.
