GAP Central Series tees off June 15

The GAP Central Series kicks off its 2020 campaign on Monday, June 15 with a Junior event at Shade Mountain Golf Course.

Overall, 18 events dot the Central Series calendar. The COVID-19 crisis forced GAP officials to reschedule three Central Series events previously designated for May.

A new tournament — the GAP Central Stroke Play Championship — serves as a highlight.

It will take place July 23 at Bucknell Golf Club. It complements the AGA/GAP Spring Stroke Championship (June 15 at Glenmaura National Golf Club) and Stroke Play Championship (July 1 at Fox Hill Country Club).

“In 2018, GAP brought opportunities to Junior and senior golfers in the Central region. Now it’s time to offer opportunities to all amateur players as well,” Joseph Faust, GAP Director of Central Operations, said. “By doing so, GAP continues to stay true to its mission to preserve, protect and promote the game of golf.”

The GAP Central Stroke Play Championship, an 18-hole stroke play event, features three divisions: Amateur (54 years of age or younger), Senior (55 to 64 years of age) and Super Senior (65 years of age or older). It is open to members of GAP Member Clubs with a handicap index of 15.0 or less.

Cost is $85 and includes cart, lunch and prizes.

A bonafide backdrop illuminates the inaugural GAP Central Stroke Play Championship. Bucknell, home of the Bucknell University golf team, hosted numerous NCAA Patriot League Championships and U.S. Open (Local) Qualifying on three occasions.

“Bucknell is among the best courses, if not the best course in the GAP Central region,” Faust said. “Faced with deep rough, challenging and strategic bunkers and tree-lined holes, golfers will find narrow fairways and many small greens that will require precision unlike other courses.”

Registration for the GAP Central Stroke Play Championship opens June 11. Furthermore, registration for all GAP Central Junior Series events is open.

The Central Senior Series begins on Thursday, June 25 at Frosty Valley. Registration for that event closes June 20.
