The Mason-Dixon Matches pits two 12-man teams, including one Junior and two Senior players, from the Golf Association of Philadelphia and the Middle Atlantic Golf Association (MAGA) over two days of competition. The Day One format is six four-ball matches. Day Two is 12 singles matches. Each match is worth one point. Ties are halved.
Leading the way for the Association’s team were the likes of Peter Barron, III, Doug Fedoryshyn, Stephen Seiden, Glenn Smeraglio and Jay Whitby, who each grabbed two valuable points over the course of their respective matches. Soon-to-be GAP Hall of Famer David Brookreson served as the victorious team captain.
“I was proud to represent such a fine organization in such a prestigious event. The GAP selected a very strong team, and we were able to pull out a well-earned victory,” said Fedoryshyn, who made his first Mason-Dixon appearance. “Baltimore’s golf course is spectacular and the conditions were exceptional. The food provided was top-notch and the staff was very accommodating.”
“You could absolutely feel A.W. Tillinghast’s stamp [at Baltimore]. We compared it very closely to the Philadelphia Cricket Club,” said Seiden. “Everyone contributed and played some very impressive golf, but more importantly we forged some great friendships. Their team was full of major champions and USGA accomplishments, however we played some great golf and were ecstatic to prevail. We were extremely happy to play well for Mr. Brookreson and help bring the cup home to Philadelphia for the coming year.”
Since 1952, the matches have been played annually. GAP leads the series overall, 34-26. There have been five ties.
